Some people experience violent reactions to fear, and fearful reactions to unfamiliar stimuli. This makes it hard for them to approach new things with appreciation. Much has been written about them, so the theoretical therapies are not worth jotting down at this point. They are not under attack, but in order to realise this, much work will have to be done, and often, no one else can do it for them.</div><div><br></div><div>In life, I wish that I and others can struggle through the trauma, and to develop desirable outcomes from all things. A difficult ideal. </div><div><br></div><div>- when spat on</div><div>- when maimed</div><div>- when cursed</div><div>- when belittled</div><div>- when ridiculed</div><div>- when disfigured</div><div>- when tortured</div><div><br></div><div>Of course, violence and fear are appropriate reactions to these things. But that only initiates a process where multiple outcomes are at stake. Sometimes you only need the thing that hurts you, to die. Sometimes, you learn to live with it. Sometimes, you need it to suffer, in vengeance. Sometimes, you acquire an appreciation for the overarching set of circumstances.</div><div><br></div><div>There are much milder sources of hurt than the things in the first list. How long are these lists? What goes in them? Who will decide what the world should adopt as its norms?</div>Jernghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10065140605321202631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1214547545721269328.post-83968567007736486492024-03-19T01:13:00.000+08:002024-03-19T01:14:01.901+08:00Attention Seeking<div><br></div><div>The way it is generally used, the semantics of it are ... At the end of a series of conversations, I couldn't figure out how to help them holistically address anything on a laundry list of actionable items which had been discussed. One common pattern throughout the chats, was that they would frequently fluctuate between a state of serenity and a state of agitation ( one might check for a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder ), based on external triggers, whereby their verbalisation of the experience would be anecdotally ( not logically ) related to past memories.</div><div><br></div><div>After multiple attempts at firefighting, I decided that a much more resource-conserving approach should be applied. I have decided that the one thing I will focus on helping them with is anger management.</div><div><br></div><div>"if you are angry with someone, it is your problem to act on"</div><div>"if someone else is angry with you, it is not your problem to act on"</div><div><br></div><div>Mainly this is the lens I will apply, when talking to them about it.</div>Jernghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10065140605321202631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1214547545721269328.post-27798769229423285492024-03-10T00:37:00.002+08:002024-03-10T00:54:03.933+08:00Governance : Startups and Marketing<div>Marketing budgets : It depends on the original plan. So budgeting is a valid lens.<br></div><div><div><br></div><div>Sometimes it is part of the plan to spend 100% on product development.</div><div><br></div><div>\\\</div><div><br></div><div>There's a clear argument for not (having a marketing budget).</div><div><br></div><div>If you are doing a high-enough risk startup, your one job is to answer the question, does this idea deserve to go to market? The answer may be no. Here you do not have a marketing communications budget.</div><div><br></div><div>If you are doing a lower risk startup, then you are sure your product is already viable, then you have a marketing communications budget.</div><div><br></div><div>I make a distinction between marketing (very broad), and marketing communications (what 70% of people mean when they say marketing).</div></div><div><br></div><div>\\\</div><div><br></div><div>I think people sometimes forget that running startups is like being cannonfodder in an army.</div><div><br></div><div>The industry has a job. Sometimes the individual company's job is to die.</div><div><br></div><div>If you don't understand this, you cannot command an army. Hehehe</div><div><br></div><div>( And more importantly, you can't command a startup, effectively, from a high-risk fund manager's point of view. ) </div><div><br></div><div>\\\</div><div><br></div><div>Sustainable entrepreneur : this is not what startups do.</div><div><br></div><div>It is not every startup's mandate to be sustainable.</div><div><br></div><div>\\\</div><div><br></div><div><div>follow the money!</div><div><br></div><div>\\\</div><div><br></div><div>The nature of all business, and relationships in general, is cute. And perverse.</div><div><br></div><div>No one actually has final knowledge of what is good or bad - everything is a gamble, even the selection of objectives/goals is a matter of gambling.</div><div><br></div><div>So commonly we see people who do not believe in the ethics, or even the success possibility, of certain goals ... the same people will work hard on chasing the goals, and they may even professionally sell these goals.</div><div><br></div><div>So the game goes on.</div></div>Jernghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10065140605321202631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1214547545721269328.post-25737422241845108082024-03-07T02:49:00.003+08:002024-03-12T16:00:39.358+08:00Reluctantly an Artist<div>Reflections on where to focus my time :</div><div><br></div><div>1. Money is boring - there are too many ways to make money, and not enough interesting ways to spend it.</div><div><br></div><div>2. Most people have poor taste - they find money interesting, because they find the available ways to spend it interesting.</div><div><br></div><div>3. The first two statements taken together are not about economics, but about aesthetics, and therefore about ethics.</div><div><br></div><div>4. If I am to take my aesthetic position, and occasionally wield it as my ethical position, then I am essentially identifying as a political artist.</div><div><br></div><div>5. I don't think the previous point is very attractive, but I can find no other fault with it.</div><div><br></div><div>Maybe I should just open a fucking art studio.</div><div><br></div><div>/ intermission /</div><div><br></div><div>Perhaps, in the interest of reducing distractions, I should ban myself from taking any freelance work other than work as a freelance artist.</div><div><br></div><div>So, for finance, HR, governance, ops, software development, etc., I could only take formal employments, but not temporary contracts.</div><div><br></div><div>This is an interesting pivot. In 2008 or thereabouts, my third year in the workforce, I branded myself as a generalist for hire. This could now be undone, whereby as a generalist I only volunteer.</div><div><br></div><div>So in my 19th year post-graduation, perhaps the way forward is :</div><div><br></div><div>- freelance gigs : only as an artist</div><div>- employments and board seats : business as usual</div><div><br></div><div>I like this idea. I will meditate upon it.</div><div><br></div><div>///</div><div><br></div><div>2024-03-12</div><div><br></div><div><div>Ongoing review of my decision to stop doing freelance work ( except for art ).</div><div><br></div><div>Maybe I have lowered my standards too much. In 2011 I was collecting 3000 $/month for work. Until 2015, I did not change this rate by much. It was a rate calculated in 2008, to be worth my time for the short-term. 13 years later, my rate is only about 65% higher, because I do almost zero commercial work, and have not been actively building my business.</div><div><br></div><div>Here is the error I made recently : I took jobs which were too small. I thought that for sufficient small blocks of time, $50-$250 jobs should be fun and easy. However, the counterparties were quite flakey even for such small amounts. So maybe I should deny freelance work below a certain size, say $5000, and just deny everything else.</div><div><br></div><div>Except art.</div><div><br></div><div>Again, this is for independent freelance contract work ... not employments, where I tend to take just anything to pass the time, like waiting tables.</div></div><div><br></div>Jernghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10065140605321202631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1214547545721269328.post-42831476115594305272024-03-06T13:15:00.001+08:002024-03-06T13:15:23.560+08:00Locker Room Talk : VCsMy one experience was, I raised at VC speeds, spent at VC speeds, but because I raised from non-VCs, their risk appetite could not tolerate further raises when we had hit peak revenue. Enjoyment is a device in individuals, which carries the function of getting individuals to do what civilisation needs them to do to get civilisation to where will end up. When civilisation reaches the end, the device will not have its uses, and so enjoyment has no place in the long-term view. Some people like to live in the present, wonderful. Some people like to focus on the future - also wonderful. But that probably means these types will not get along in the present, so much.<br></div>Jernghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10065140605321202631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1214547545721269328.post-27557125690533477932024-03-01T13:33:00.001+08:002024-03-01T13:33:41.818+08:00Disambiguating Sex, Gender, Attraction, and Behaviour : introduction <div>1. But dumbfuckery has cardinality, and so some of us are higher order dumbfucks and some of us are of the lower orders. It is not relevant to the ego, whom is which - we are simply what we are.</div><div><br></div><div>In economics, comparative advantage is determined by scarcity along lines of segmentation. So as time passes, we see that dumbfucks surge into this or that sector of the economy, due to opportunities. When a new business trend emerges, such as steam, electronics, software, big data, AI, etc. we find that through the natural flow of dumbfuckery, margins begin to increase as dumbfuckery increases within each business trend, before margins eventually compress once more. This is already well documented in literature on the cycles of hype in innovation, so we need not elaborate further on hype and efficiency.</div><div><br></div><div>So when automation is trendy, we find that dumbfucks also surge into areas which "cannot be automated", that is, art, and hospitality, among other sectors. So over time as trends move around, dumbfucks bifurcate into those who are aligned with the trend, seeking beta, and those who are capitalising on alternatives, seeking alpha.</div><div><br></div><div>It is always amusing to monitor trends, and to see how dumbfuckery naturally rearranges itself in the economy. That is, the dumbfuck economy.</div>Jernghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10065140605321202631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1214547545721269328.post-62225820241959637512024-02-17T15:11:00.001+08:002024-02-17T15:11:47.104+08:00dried algae / organics on tiles<div>tested :</div><div><br></div><div>wire brush, manual, and on drill</div><div><br></div><div>acid, sodium bicarbonate, sodium hydroxide</div><div><br></div><div>--</div><div>dirt : is probably mostly dried algae</div><div>--</div><div><br></div><div>If trying this again, </div><div><br></div><div>(a) use 3000 psi waterjet</div><div><br></div><div>(b) use water and wire brush first ; if not easy, then get NaOH flakes and saturate wet surface, soak for an hour, add more if not saturated, keep wet ; then repeat brush</div><div><br></div><div>(c) not sure if the acid helped, but it might work as an alternative to the NaOH ; but if you use acid, you should probably neutralise the area before wire brushing</div>Jernghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10065140605321202631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1214547545721269328.post-35764533632460604592024-02-16T12:50:00.007+08:002024-03-03T10:56:20.135+08:00trading algorithm v0.0.(2|3|4|5|6)<div>v0.0.2. Well what if gov.my were to run the country on iOS? Standardise everything. Centralise app development. Consolidate all data to PADU. Electronic government here has been a mess, all my life, despite the brouhaha of Vision 2020. Outsource infosec concerns to a US company ... loss of sovereignty? Maybe, not necessarily.</div><div><br></div><div>The cheapest new iPhone is MYR 2500. The country's population is estimated at 34 million people, soon. It would cost 20+% of the national budget to buy everyone an iPhone, before program discounts, buy-backs, substitutions with already-owned devices, and a total asset tracking registrar for all devices.</div><div><br></div><div>I don't own any Apple goods, and I don't have a need to in the foreseeable future. But it was a good opportunity to riff on their appstore sideloading developments.</div>Jernghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10065140605321202631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1214547545721269328.post-81929212990135155932024-02-15T00:42:00.001+08:002024-02-15T00:42:46.836+08:00more hegemonic ranting Usually I manage to filter them out of my surroundings. But every now and then life admits upon me a familiar kind of idiot. They take the roles of parents, bosses, friends, business partners, customers, vendors, strangers, lovers ... the list goes on. Their childlike rage expresses that "one ought to know better", as they are staunch believers in common sense. But when queried for structure, they cannot provide it. And it is not their fault, that they are ignorant. Society as a whole often fails to properly educate its citizens. That is why this is sad.Jernghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10065140605321202631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1214547545721269328.post-57053605841973829582024-02-14T15:52:00.001+08:002024-02-14T15:52:46.852+08:00Physical Anxiety + Adultism ( as in, a form of prejudice )<div>/// Reflections on physical anxiety ... and perhaps, adultism ///</div><div><br></div><div>( As seen in society, including workplaces. So I looked up some examples of her speeches. Here's a technical-ish view.</div><div><br></div><div>She struggles to be heard because the amplification is too weak - and the stress is apparent as her tone rises to higher frequencies. The higher the stress, the higher the tone of a voice, and the more it warbles. You can't do mass modification on the audience to fix sexist and racist interpretations of this phenomenon. So it's much easier to fix the gear instead.</div><div><br></div><div>1. Raise the amplication, or move the mic closer.</div><div>2. Train her to move closer to the mic.</div><div>3. The resulting savings in energy can be rechanneled to articulation, and slower speech, at whatever register is most comfortable for the speaker.</div><div><br></div><div>The lady needs a better sound engineer and speech coach. </div>Jernghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10065140605321202631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1214547545721269328.post-61844966575329499662024-02-09T23:02:00.001+08:002024-02-09T23:02:14.488+08:00What is Love?<div><br></div><div><br></div><div>"Yes, generally. I told one partner, "my love is cheap, and easy to acquire." Or something like that.</div><div><br></div><div>Generally, people's feelings are like balls of yarn. If i say i love you, it just means i help you to unravel your ball of yarn, for fun, without asking for money as I would in a more commercial setting. </div><div><br></div><div>Yarn is fun. Some people don't want it unravelled. Some people do.</div><div><br></div><div>Getting paid to do it is also fun. For everyone else, there's love and friendship.</div><div><br></div><div>All the associations of "love" with obsession, dependency ... that's just philistine behaviour I want nothing to do with.
