TIL : it is easy to fool someone into thinking their laptop is physically locked, when it is not.

Skill is an abstraction over achievements. Achievements happen regardless of goals. Goals can only be defined in advance in terms of strategy. Goals defined locally are referred to as tactical objectives.

So between

- skill

- achievement

- strategic goals

- tactical goals

Your subset of 2 which is against 4, can be used to evaluate 1, but you can't forecast 4. So your forecasts and KPIs must include mainly 3, only.

18 Nov

As of today, it's official. I started thinking of the median hipster cafe's attempt to make "western food" ... as roughly equivalent to the mee goreng I grew up thinking of as too common.

/

Hm. Interesting study. So, as one is trained to be subconsciously analytical of data, in order to facilitate rest one can reduce data diversity to reduce subconscious fatigue. For example by dimming lighting environments, and applying monochrome filters.

19 Nov :

Back to the bushfires.

Friday nights as a salaryman : same dinner, go home, do laundry, stiff drink. I know the point of a salary is that it gets spent at some point, but what if there isn't much to spend it on in this town? 🤔 Then we have to build it? At least I'm half caught-up on sleep today - better than nothing. I guess I could see Carnage.

Indisciplined, and late to bed. Nothing much has changed in a coupla decades ... back then it was magazines and TV, now it's Instagram : work is generally less boring ...

20 Nov :

Apparently sleeping with music on needs to happen more often for stimulus. Managed to schedule two coffee meets with different business developers on different subjects. Probably should spend the rest of the day on talent management designs.

1830h too much procrastination. Back to work. But first, let us buy cucumbers.

1919h waiting for laundry to dry. Wondering about opportunity cost in terms of productive hours per alcohol unit consumed. Probably about five working hours. Hmm. Oh look, also, it's already past my bedtime, and I did no official work today.

Probably time to enforce reflection until the sheets dry.

2255h after some emergency work, and a bit of skimming articles on physics, plus catching up on documentation about the flat purchase, the laundry is mostly dry, and I should put myself to bed.

I must work harder on finding new friends, so I gotta work that top of the funnel.

/

Wondering if the Special Branch is bothering to hunt down all the antivax clubs. LOL

I think it's a major motivation to work harder just being reminded about the existence of these people and the probability of their programs including falsification of vaccine records used for public transit etc.

I mean part of the complication is that you probably have antivax sympathisers in the SB itself.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not inherently opposed to antivaxxers - but I do tend to be opposed to weak enforcement of public policies.

21 Nov

0854h evaluation of sleep. Perhaps a more focused set of alarms per day.

0933h I think more air-conditioning counts as a labour optimisation that I can benefit from pay for.

1037h time to feed; much to do

I just realised that I only worry about myself, when I empathise with people who worry about me. In conclusion, I really need to be less empathetic despite recommendations to be more so. Lol. Pests : throw'em out.

Afternoon :

A coffee meet.

Evening :

Dinner.

Sauvignon blanc and squid roe. I've never had cuttlefish roe before. At a mamak shop!

Also I was very happy today to drive by Kota Raya, seeing the masses of normal people out there, back at it. I live among eggo supremacists for the most part.

Some work was done after dinner. After supper more work was done. Buit a leaderboard signal detection sheet for colleagues to reduce manual work - rudimentary, but we have to start somewhere.

Midnight traffic is awesome. From clock-out, lock-up, walk-down, autopay, Midvalley to Mayang Jaya, stepping up to the grill door, was 26 minutes.

22nov

Time to learn MySQL.

23nov

The risk management department is an extension of the finance department. Both are concerned with gambling. For example if the probability of getting fined for littering is 50%, and the fine is $1,000, and if there is a clear P&L impact of making or saving $501 including any reputational costs from littering, then the RMD basically greenlights the littering. Of course this is a cartoon example, and RMDs will be more conservative than that, but you get the picture.

24nov

Job A : starting to feel like biweekly cell group meeting.

Job B : starting to feel like daily morning chapel, and one weekly service.

Lmao #rituals #socialconditioning

I don't think I've done this much group work since 2000.

/

Completing a brief study of regex before bed. Not super work related so can't do it at the office.

25 nov

Hm. Still sleeping too late, but at least this week I turn the lights off earlier.

Reviewing the list of things I do mainly for social conditioning bimbotics :

199x Chinese, school, history, Christian leadership

200x college, shirts, shoes, corporations, talent management, bars, hospitality

201x long pants, hoodies, vacations, fine dining, investment, entrepreneurship, social media

202x probably revisiting computer games I suppose, and other consumer and corporate finance things

Hm.

Time to feed.

26nov

Office noise conditions:

1. Working automated solution is to use double barriers, and sometimes double ANC. (ANC earbuds under ANC headphones).

2. Meditative/manual solution is to take more breaks, review all memories from past period (several minutes to an hour), prune out irrelevant background conversations, then re-commit pruned data to memory.

Good learning experiences!

Past11pm

Done with biz networking for the day. Complete with performative arguing over payment with the server. Tapping notes in the car. Standing by for a coupla shifts to try and move the odds of work getting done in my favour. Meanwhile probably just going to swipe through my quotas and crash.

27nov

Past noon. Awake. Affording a little contemplation. Pruning memories from the past week of business activities. Networking is logged so it can be deleted, mostly. Large obligations still require more care, so I should attend to those shortly. Smaller obligations still in chaos. I could improve the precision of my inputs significantly, with a little more effort.

28 Nov

Rev-matching on a torque converter : works better when the tachometer works, or when I'm not wearing ANC; and at lower gear ratios, not like ... 3rd gear at 110kmph.

Generally, I don't remember having heat problems with the 659cc Kancil. Maybe I was driving slower. But the 847cc Kancil seems to overheat under direct sunlight, with the AC on (meaning increased power drain, and increased radiator air intake temperature), somewhere between 100 and 110 kmph, which I guess is around 4000 to 5500 RPM, since my tacho is wonky. But the 847cc certainly seems more fuel-efficient

2123h

Two hours past bed time.

Reviewing risk factors across HR, finance, supply chain, vendors, governance, IT, and new ventures.

Hm.

/

I watched a few episodes of that controversial Cowboy Bebop adaptation. I found the bug. The director did not manage enunciation and body language well, so resultingly many actors are throwing their voices like they would be in a live theatrical performance - while their full-body expressions remain stilted. This is particularly jarring with the two male leads who seem to be in character only about 40% of the time.

You can argue that this was an attempt to match the hyperbole of the source material ... but that simply brings us back to the issue of over-acted vocals, and under-acted expressions. It comes off like a high-school adaptation of Shakespeare which tries to hew closely to the script, at the expense of fluidity.

What do you think?

Like altered carbon

The most common lie is, "I'm OK."

Interestingly enough, many people are taught to do this by idiot trainers.

1 Dec

I'm generally most productive working 18 hours at a time, and sleeping at a 5:12 ratio. As a result, I avoid trying to be efficient within normal business hours. Normal business hours are basically spent waiting for other people go be free to cowork. Of course, the nature of various jobs pays you to cowork, not to work independently, so on with it. The only added complexity of late is that restaurants are mostly closed until normal business hours due to lockdown hangover. So for people who do not have a kitchen, we have food supply issues rolled-in for good measure lol. Therefore, protein powder remains the useful ration.

Industrial education for top talent isn't about helping fresh graduates make $24,000 instead of $12,000. It's closer to letting them know that in KL the max professional fee (employee, not owner) is around $50,000 ... and letting the student figure out where they want to be in the food chain.

This moves up to around $90,000 for mid-20-somethings.

$192,000 for people hitting 30.

Etc.

On time travel : It's simply because what we call "time" and "consciousness" are probably a tautology. You get down to the level of quantum phenomena and you peer behind the veil a little bit because whatever the hell consciousness is it isn't actually equipped to function in its macroscopic way at the microscopic scale.

Also, many smart people live in this ridiculous myth that ordered systems ala Marie Kondo and the artistry of that which is designed are the measure of progress to be aspired to. But by definition all aspirations to civilisation are weird and unsustainable. The normal thing is an eventual return to chaos. Civilisational progress in general is a singular accident which we happen to observe due to the properties of consciousness. Of course you can posit that the future singularity is causally antecedent in an antitime fashion, and for some reason consciousness is defined by the antitimetic decay of the singularity being observed by itself in reverse. Not a new idea in terms of time, as various traditions speak of the end of time (the beginning of antitime) as a definitive locus in the field of observed spaces.

TIR : whomever up with the lexicon of "event-oriented programming" did so redundantly. The confusing part is trying to figure out if an event (DSL) is a bunch of spatial characteristics at a point in time, or if it is a transition of state across two times. It turns out it is the later, so we could canonically refer to "events" as "operations" , that is simply ... operations on data.

My bestie has been talking on and off about the ring they're going to get from their person. 11dec

Since 2021 is almost over, and since most of it has gone according to plan, I should probably stop rummaging around for tactical advantages and start refocusing on the three-year forward period. Hm. That should reduce distractions.

I spend most of my life either immersed in long games, or catching up with pop culture. Swing, swing.
Note to self : time to start buying tyres online

Routines require improvement, in order to calibrate for optimisation of 3y trajectory.

At 38yo, food time to figure out that scheduling reflection/study/thinking time together with physical exercise, is an optimisation. Minimum useful period seems to be 20 minutes. So, I guess I have to schedule like that.

13 Dec

Corporate development : I hate talking about titles because I always double-take to check that I spelt it right.

God-damn Ding Talk kerning ...

/

Ok. At least there is one reliable place to eat near the office. But it closes early. So more skew towards the earlier side of the day. I should invest more in food, but I don't know what's worth it. For now there's no fancy pants woman in my routine who normalises $100 grocery trips.

Maybe I should put my running shoes at the office also.

The great saman sale : It's a complete waste of energy. They should just raise the speed limit, enforce it 20x harder than now, collect 100% of fines or drivers go to jail, and stop giving discounts. 15 Dec

OK - free jazz is as good as caffeine. Maybe equivalently useful, without the side-effects.

Tires reset to 32psi/220kpa. Test down gentle incline at 120kmph stable. RPMs probably around 5000-5500 but this distro/tacho setup is reading like 9000. I guess that means, vibration at 80kmph is indicative of serious deoptimisation, and I should be aligning as soon as vibrations show up at 110kmph. However, now I seem to have busted the valve lifters ... as thin metal tapping noises have emerged.

Varieties : Tactical vs. Strategic Hires

When organisations hire people, we should each be judging if they meet one of two criteria :

1. Tactical : they can be productive within a few days on the job, and they will endure for at least 3 months; for example :

  • "compliance officer's day to day work"
  • "help managers chase people"

2. Strategic : they may take a few weeks to be productive, but before hiring we have already determined that we would want to work with them for 2-5 years ( personally, I tend to think in-terms of 5-10 years) ; for example :

  • "design and ensure that all regulatory risk is P&L-efficient"
  • "ensure that the talent supply of the company is unbreakable"

Broadly organisations have short-term needs (tactical : predictable) and long-term needs (strategic : unpredictable).

TACTICAL

  • we know WHAT we want people to do NOW
  • candidate must be aligned with the WHAT-NOW
  • time-frames usually less than 1 year :
  • 3 months is a productive stay for a waiter (good "enough")
  • 9 months is a productive stay for a finance clerk (2 years is pushing it ... )
  • basically you expect these people to be misaligned from their role very quickly

STRATEGIC

  • we don't know WHAT IF XYZ will happen LATER
  • candidate must be aligned with the WHAT-IF
  • time-frames usually more than 2 years :
  • "I need you to find X-type of problems, and when you find them, fix them"

Party Strategy

My friend sends me a photo of some people drinking. "Do you know anyone here?" I said no, I did not. Then I recognised one of whom I'd met before ... and then we talked about that person. "Probably would not find me very amusing, playing with laptop, which is my normal drinky party activity. 🙂" "You're not invited anyway," she said.

In general I am not very fun to have at drinky parties. My own interests in life are mainly math, women, and making money. I'm actually only really interested in math, but in order to fit into society you are expected to have "normal" hobbies, so I picked the top normal thing that people do which I didn't mind doing, i.e. being sexual, and then I decided to be as straight vanilla as possible in practice in order to minimise complexity - though I would probably count as pan- or bi- in terms of what I can adapt to. As for making money, that is just a matter of buffering time so that I can do more math at some point (well that is the ongoing gamble, I suppose).

So when I get invited to local drinky parties, which is very rarely for good reason - I tend to just work on my laptop in a corner. Well nowadays I guess reading on my phone or tablet would make sense. Unless of course, I have specific information that I would like to obtain from the participants, in which case I work the room.

Another way I try to fit in is to host. That's how I ended up studying hospitality, which turned into several years of (ongoing) work. I like that role. It is the world's oldest profession.

Common fallacies I have encountered while hiring a data team :

1. Your human experience of the world is fundamentally different from a computer's experience of the world. It's not. The algorithms of data science are the same sort of process that enabled you to learn how to walk, talk, and discover your hobbies.

2. The biggest opportunity in businesses today is data management. It's not - it's knowledge management. Most businesses suck at knowledge management because they don't understand 1.

3. Becoming good at data science means learning data science tools. It does not. This is by far the most frustrating issue I encounter in young executives. Becoming good at data science requires you to figure out 1.

Peace.

Every now and then someone wants to quibble about how seeing a sunset is different from seeing a digital representation of that sunset. From time to time I bother to spell it out. If you've ever had the joy of listening to music, or of looking at a photo ... perhaps you may have considered how everything you see and hear without exception can be reduced to marks on paper, or a stupid little piece of plastic, and then reassembled and put back into someone else's head. Set aside your feelings for just a second ... and contemplate this fact, and that these problems were solved DECADES ago. Reload your feelings, without their visual and aural accompaniments (including those in your mind's eye) ... you see, the feelings also have a shape, and that is an introduction to how you can eventually send those over the wire too.

TWIL :

First, a 42" FHD/1920x1080p television is a really good tool for group work. The technology is mature, and on a desk, it's basically more effective than a projector for a small number of people. This one just happens to be six-years-old ... it was the CCTV from the first Sudo Brew cafe. ( You can basically get a crap brand one now for MYR 800 new - just slightly more than a basic 24" monitor. )

Second, nowadays ... at 43" ... 4K/3840x2160 TVs offer as much as 214% more pixels-per-Ringgit than FHD ... however, I don't think I will be upgrading soon as I don't even have a computer that can support this. LOL

Third ... new past-gen T-series 14" ThinkPads ... can be had with Ryzen top-spec 5850U, 16GBx1 (thus expandable), backlit keyboards, fingerprinted touchpads, and 5y NBD-OSS for under $1154 BEFORE bulk discounts.

Alright - kinda done for the day. Time to reset and gbtw soon.

Totds:

1. F&B operations are isomorphic with dev-ops.

2. Data science etymologically refers to computational science within the domain of commerce and industry. Data science literally refers to pure mathematics, but no one actually means this. Ignoring the latter, and under constraint of the former, it is therefore meaningless to pursue data science without a business goal.

3. Some people don't think about work outside the office. So this is OK as long as they don't overbill.

4. Some people think about work outside the office, but don't send a bill. This is bad at scale, but may be tolerated in younger companies. For infantile companies it is often de rigueur.

6.5 h to target. Lights out.

I generally think of staff as children.

Raising a family has previously been an interesting problem.

This year, raising two families concurrently is a new and more interesting problem.

DNA is a loose tool, and meat is a slow medium - propagating minds is much quicker.

Also updated dating profiles to say "workflow designer" - full job titles are too cumbersome; generalist is too vague; coach is too hoary; IDK. Calling myself a designer seems like the cool thing to do. Ask me if it works, later.

Still late by 3-4 hours.

Can't seem to optimise car costs much more - the only thing left seems to be season parking access.

One of my religious / spiritual aspirations is to reduce my conscience to zero. This is probably unattainable. That is why it makes for a good target, under this category of targets.

Some people worry about the reason for their existence, and their afterlife.

Some people want good selfies.

We each have different ideals of civilization.

Food stuff.

1. Popped into Sage for a meeting. This is where all the dressy tai-tais hang out, apparently.

2. For relevance to industry, I should probably set aside a fund for dining at places at $20-$200/cover. My goto dinner place is around $3, office lunch goto is $5, home prep rations are around $1-2. Maybe I should model this as taking 10% of income, and assigning it to food in general, including all this social, commercial, industrial stuff. I'm already averaging 6-8% as it is.

3. In a few months, having a kitchen at home for the second time in a few years should be an improvement of value. Target : all meals under $2.

//

One of my best friends was asking me how we are different. I think my perception is that I make exponential returns on my time. I spend most of my life studying, so as a 25-yo making $400/mo, a 30-yo making less, and a 37-yo making $800/mo and not getting paid half the time ... it isn't exactly apparent where my asset growth is. Whereas I have this strange perception that the knowledge I had at 21 was more than what most people acquire in a lifetime, and I've been just rolling it and investing in boring stable spaces for the last 17 years or so ... what the hell, as much as I like my friends, we're probably just wired differently.

Test Design : Evaluation of Management Roles

If you are already past the stage of entertaining alternative candidates, then you are no longer testing for general qualities of staff, but for performance on the job.

Perhaps :

1. Your end goal is, the candidate will deliver consistently "over benchmark".

2. The benchmark is relatively concrete, and repetitive, so instead of testing against a "qualitative proxy for the actual benchmark" you should test against the "actual benchmark".

3. The only way to get data on the error "against the actual benchmark" is to spot check, or continuously check. If you are not on-site, then you have to spot check. This is called "sampling", in statistics. The "sample of opportunities for failure" is a proxy for the 'set of all possible opportunities for failure".

4. Next you must consider the division of labour. Is the benchmark defined qualitatively or quantitatively?

(For hospitality there are hundreds of points to quantify per service per customer. When you have a corporate level quality assurance team, this is the way to go. Now maybe with fewer staff, you have to define success qualitatively, "by eyeballing/tasting". If this is the case, then testing can only be executed by the person who can do a qualitative assessment. Whose body is doing the testing?)

5. If you require a leader to be multi-faceted, it becomes harder to identify leaders. If you design an organisation where leadership revolves around cooperation between smaller, focused roles, then it becomes easier to identify leaders. Testing is just the cost of identification. In the latter sort of design, the only prerequisite for leadership is readiness, ability, and willingness to co-operate.

Culture Wars : Empaths and Rationalists

One type of person believes that we don't hurt other people because we all agreed not to.

The other type of person believes that we don't hurt other people because we care about them.

Each type is terrified of the other ... because they don't follow each other's rules.

This is one of those things which makes life interesting.

Marketing Organisations : Taxonomy

*Marketing* - broadly refers to all the activities regarding supply and demand, in a value-chain. Customers are on one hand, and the supply-chain is on the other. In some stakeholder management formations, I might label this as the *quality* team, which protects the *customer's* interests.

Marketing ➡️ *Product* teams - tend to mean the strategy, R&D, and ops, for the stuff that customers pay for officially on receipts. This includes all the ... *things* they take home (breakfasts), *spaces* they can experience (park tickets), and *services* they receive (tuition, massages, etc.).

*Marketing ➡️ Services* teams - tend to mean the strategy, R&D, and ops, done to *enhance or enable* the first team, but customers don't get billed for this in receipts. The biggest example is *marketing communications* / marcom. Under marcom, structurally *brand management* comes first ... which is designing the *personality* , and *promise* of the business ... most other activities serve the brand! Example : in a brick'n'mortar business, the *e-commerce* storefront operations is a service, and it is not exactly marcom, but beside marcom. Yet in an e-commerce business, this might be reclassified from "service" to "product", as here the online storefront would be front and centre.

With juvenile companies,  the nominal "marketing department" only does marcom, and some other marketing services. And the nominal "ops team" is actually the marketed product team.

This is important to note because a junior marcom staff may think they do "marketing" but actually they do only services, and sometimes only the marcom part.

When someone says they need coaching or hires in "marketing", we can drill down to ask, "product or services (as defined above)?", and "if under services, is it just marcom?", and "if under marcom, which channel, or segment, or horizontal?"

Telepathy

Data Science Fallacies

Peace.

Entertainment is the Active Displacement of Values in Analytical Memory

My friend Sam plays games ... on her phone, more often when she is stressed out at work. We often banter about how unproductive this is - however, it turns out that she is probably doing okay, and that this is actually quite productive.

Sam sent me a post about this thread, which is about this academic paper, which suggests a case for games to be utilised for psychiatric therapy.

Just before she sent it, I was jotting down a small epiphany about what recreation is at the level of memory pathways.

Studying productivity : repair phase - displacement of short-term memory values is performed by injecting new values, and there seems to be no way around this. So I must return to frequent meditations on the modality of my working experiences, so that I can strategically overwrite them.
At this point it dawns on me that hobbies are not about (simply) enjoying the sensation of their objects, rather hobbies are about displacing values in memory used by analytical pathways ... by analysing objects different from the objects which one has become tired of analysing.
Which brings us back to how less productive people

  • work,
  • then veg,
  • then work
- but more productive people

  • work,
  • then work on other stuff,
  • then go back to work on the first set of stuff.

- and how effective vegging requires analysis of the vegging experience.
Today I learnt something related to both my area of study (people as information systems) and the jobs I work on (two jobs in the entertainment industry).

2021-09-17 to 2021-10-10

That's enough drama for one week. I hope. Weekend means, time to catch up on work. I hope.
Also I finally got around to testing out the replacement of ( phone and laptop ) with a single tablet. As anticipated, there are now fewer distractions while driving, eating, etc. due to the reduced ergonomics of the primary computing device. I do need to get a satchel of some sort to lug the damn thing around, soon.
Also, someone sent eucalyptus leaves, so my desk smells like a fruit bowl. I don't like it, but it's a harmless diversification of sensation, so it should be assimilated.

//

Context : I've never in nine years polished or waxed my car, or applied any detailing or paint procedure more complex than brushing.
TIL : $4 including shipping, and discounts.
TIL: ceramic coating appears to work on any surface, so if I like my car looking grungy and worn out, I don't need to clear coat it! Also, it replaces wax. So essentially, all we need for complete car care :
1. car grade detergent (probably just less harsh pH, and nothing fancy; fungible with non-caustic dish detergent)
2. clay
3. clay lube (anything with SiO2 really; but for minimalism this is fungible with non-caustic dish detergent)
4. SiO2 + TiO2 coating
5. Clean (YMMV) water
6. Micro-fibre cloths
7. Spray bottles

Also I don't understand this pattern of separating Job Purposes, from Job Duties, from Job Requirements. (I seem to try to squish job descriptions down into a paragraph everywhere I go.)
First define the Job Purpose. The Job Duties are simply to fulfill the Purpose. The Job Requirements are none except that you fulfill the Duties. Why make things more complicated than that? Even if it's a really long list, why not have them in one list instead of three separate ones?
Traditionally of course :
1.
The Job Requirements are qualities you have that increase your probability that you will be able to fulfill the Job Duties - this is a fallacy. One should never rely on prediction, only on evidenced delivery.
2.
The Job Purpose is something written intuitively/abstractly, whereas the Job Duties are concrete/minutiae. This is also a fallacy. Intuition is for lazy people.
3.
It's a crap shot anyway - if you have an intuition (subconsciously evidence opinion) then just use it. But anyone who has to read about which intuitions to apply probably can't get useful intuitions from reading ... and they will probably only develop useful intuitions only after trying to apply what they read about, after falsifying some of those intuitions through application.

I'm not very productive this month. But we are only four days in. Then again, it could be due to the general complexity of Malaysia's lockdowns in 2021. Also, starting two mid-career jobs in one year, both at growth-stage companies, in the transformation function, can be a bit mind-boggling. As a whole I have been given many opportunities, and I think my societal roles may be envied by some, yet that doesn't solve the present issue of becoming more productive still by the end of October. The main strategy seems to be a total review of the hours of a week, and how those get spent. Exercise must now be combined with car-care, and social life remains mostly aborted. Most stress comes from the nature of the jobs themselves, being in an operational capacity, without executive powers ... so far. Ah, the plight of middle-managers is the true condition of senior advisors, all you can do is wait for generals to act. In general, I have a lot left undone, and the absence of an appropriately sized office simply multiplies the complexity of daily consciousness. Perhaps soon, that part will fix itself. I must remember to consult that banker.

I was talking to this chick, who likes hanging out in bars for the ambience, good food, and wine. I suppose I don't have much to offer people like that ... I think of these things as artificial constructs, that don't really factor into my fundamental work ... and while I do engage with these cultures in work, (hipster coffee, and computer games), I do so simply out of a professional interest. In my daily life as I meet people, and work with and around them, I understand everyone simply as a lump of meat that eats, sleeps, and processes information, among other things. It's a curious person to be.

The New Nusantaran Diet : where is it?

Fine dining - this week I've had to revisit the concept a bit, and here are some brief thoughts about fine dining in Malaysia today. Hm. All monetary figures in USD for convenience. And nothing in this article refers to Malaysia alone, as the case is the same elsewhere also.

I was first presented with the concept of "fine dining" around 2006, when I was working in Kuala Lumpur - and I had to try very hard not to laugh. While my colleagues from the consulting firm ordered food, I ordered a cup of tea. I really wasn't going to pay $ 11 for spaghetti when I made a gross of $ 453 per month. I did enjoy the company of my peers, though they probably enjoyed my company a little less that evening - they made only a little more than I did, and I spent most of the evening smirking at their idiocy.

Many expensive dining experiences in Kuala Lumpur are exotic, and yet by and large they fail tests of finesse. When people in Malaysia say "fine dining", they also have a tendency to refer to "fine dining as it exists in other countries" - and this mistake is the first and last reason why "fine" dining in Kuala Lumpur, with few exceptions, tends to be shit.

To be clear, the high prices are often justified by bringing in ingredients from outside the region using grossly polluting methods ( air freight ), and then sold with minimal preparation as "naked". I kid you not - I don't understand people who don't think this is funny - they basically express a lifestyle which says, "I'm too cheap to go to this other place, so I'll fly their indigenous food over here, and that's how you know, I'm fine".

In 2021 Malaysia's hourly minimum wage hovers around $ 1.38. Just yesterday in Petaling Jaya ( basically, greater Kuala Lumpur), I had "nasi campur" or self-serviced rice, curry, vegetables, and fish ( high-quality protein ) including some 10-30 ingredients for  $ 1.67 - now this isn't the most nutritious way to spend 1 hour and 13 minutes of minimum wage. But it is an example of how you could spend that much on FOOD AS A SERVICE, and get sufficient nutrition to make a human body economically productive at either manual or intellectual tasks. So let this be a benchmark for food service at the level of essential services. Let's teleport out.

Now in order to buy a basic sandwich and salad in first-world nations takes roughly the same number of minutes of minimum wage in those countries. But for 4-8 hours of minimum wage you can get a meal in a more formal setting, also known as "fine dining". Let's now teleport back.

Today "fine" dining experiences in Kuala Lumpur are nominally $ 36 for lunch, $ 70 for dinner, and ranging up to $ 200 or more. This means local restaurateurs hawk a cultural experience to naive locals for 26 to 173 minimum wage hours. But where is the finesse? It doesn't matter how pure and fresh the food is at these prices, it's simply not relevant to the average citizen. And what isn't within reach of the average person, simply doesn't qualify as fine. It's blithely over-engineered. (Which isn't to say, I'm not frequently the culprit of grossly over-engineered projects, myself.)

I'm just going to cut this rant short by posting a slightly "localised" version of Noma's manifesto. Brain this, if you will. I'm waiting for the ASEAN luxury food exports to take off ... but no one wants to make it happen ...

;)

recap : 2011-2021

It's been a long decade. It started out the year after a two-year contract managing web developers in Bangsar. I ran small gigs for $4,000/mo, helped my friend to run public relations for YTL Comms, SAP, EMC, and Microsoft, and started practicing stock trades on the KLSE. I bought a tablet to study PDFs.

I was dating someone I'd met at my first post-college interview six years earlier - she didn't really like me - probably explains why I was only offered an internship. We went to Bali and Bandung - I'm not much of a tourist ... but I'll travel for business, and women are good business. We were supposed to do Yangon, but I screwed that up, because I sucked at planning. I bought my first Kancil for $1,400, because she'd made me drive her TT back after dropping her at the airport for a business trip ... and it was pretty scary driving without any practice. So I practiced, and crashed the Kancil within a month of getting it. I got the car fixed.

I figured that I should start investing in real-estate - I was 28, and with a first car I could drive out far enough to actually afford something. I settled on a cheap $20,000 flat in Kajang. I ended up living there for less than 18 months over the decade. Right now it's unkempt, and covered in dust and dead birds - we'll need to hook up the power and water again. I'm waiting for my PA to spare me a few days.

It was 2011. I spent most of 2012 studying functional programming at home, and my imaginary friends were the Bloomberg anchors. Facebook, Apple, Herbalife - that was an interesting study. 2013 was spent entrepreneuring as a business consultant, and learning about speciality coffee. I sold the tablet to my client as a POS. I set up some Facebook group that flourished, then resigned as it's administrator. 2014 I worked four jobs, clawing back from $400/mo to $4,000/mo. The third job was so monotonous, that I learnt how to swim ... just doggy paddling with my head above the pool water. 2015 I met the love of my life, and founded my own business, which ran for five years before I was arrested. We sold the trademark, and buried the operation. People died.

It's 2021 now. Every single one of these experiences has turned out to be foundational for the work I do today. I don't know what I'll be doing in ten years, but it feels ok right now. I'm on track with what i thought I'd do between 20 and 40. I'm 38 this year. Right on track. Why ain't I dead yet? IDK. I guess I still haven't pissed off the right people. I still haven't bought insurance. When will I die? There's only one way to find out ... oh, but I gave up waiting for Apple to unify the iPhone, iPad, and Macbook ... so I got an Android tablet, and that's where this is being written. Let's see if consolidation works.

Eat, work and sleep, is a sufficient model when one is a manual labourer, as I was during much of the past five years. But it is not good enough for deskwork, because not all sleep benefits deskwork.

Instead it may be more refined to specify - eat, work, and recover - as the applicable model for industrial readiness.

Over the past few months, I hacked together a basic inventory tracker for my office. The weird thing was deciding to implement this in Google Sheets, using scripts that crawled GS like the storage-layer of a database. IT was a good introductory exercise in writing a database ... rudimentary locking, incremental index generation, optimisations based on size-of-data and access-patterns, mutability, etc. It wasn't anticipated, but it has been interesting.

I find it interesting that discussions of a contract can take up dynamic and elaborate mutations after the contract has been terminated. I thought about the intentions behind this, and I decided that the intentions do not matter, as the operational priority for discussing a contract ... is while it remains under enforcement. Given the absence of a lawsuit ... and my general deprioritisation of the public's view of my work ... I think it is best to ignore such discussions as being distracting from ongoing work.

An ergonomic ABAC implementation is going to be a good intellectual indulgence for the coming weeks.

/

In the few minutes I've had to think about my pet projects, I need to implement session-authenticated access control in this AWS Lambda web framework. So I had to check on the this definition. I think I will have to use ABAC, as it is a superset of RBAC.

Also Nth pet peeve : people who draw distinctions between "authentication" and "access control" - truly the latter is a subset of the former. You're only authenticated in any event in any system, by virtue of access control checking specific tokens. You're not you, unless you can prove that you are you.

I think just to get into the mindset of someone who is happy making 1500-2500 MYR/mo at the age of 18-24 ... is going to take me a day of proper thinking.

At 18 I was making 80 MYR/h sweeping stairs, and at 21 my classmates were doing 19,000 MYR/mo jobs (before annual bonus,  38,000 MYR signing bonus). In 2006 when I got to see the data, even the bank CIO salaries in Malaysia were not very interesting :  30,000 MYR/mo + 100% bonus? Really?

Anyway, we all have different journeys. The point of anthropology is to become other people. On we go. Let me think about this properly.

I have to figure out which hat to put on because I spend most of my adult life in a retirement mindset where money doesn't matter ... but to play the game properly, I have to maintain a global context, while exercising some empathy with the locals.

Housekeeping - up with the Joneses :

I postponed using e-wallets since they were started in Malaysia ... till yesterday, and today I theoretically saved RM12 in shipping and RM15 ... a 5.1% discount. I think the amount of time it took to calculate this, and sign up for that, and park this and that ... took maybe ... an hour. RM 27 / hour is not worth it. But in theory it may come to a 5% discount on a number of future events, and that results in : whatever consumption I do on Shopee. Assuming it comes down to something like RM 2/minute, I think this starts to make sense. I'll have to monitor and see how, if it does.

Credit cards. Definitely when I think about it, even with an RM100 rebate, after two hours of research, it's a net loss on time. But hey, I suppose a few hundred bucks a year back on petrol and groceries is a more effortless approach.

Following up on my once-every-five-years consumer finance optimisation project ... so the best (Maybank) credit card for cash back is Signature Visa.

Cash back RM 1058 a year. But you have to jump through hoops. You need to spend RM 1760 a month,  on PETROL and GROCERIES only, in receipts above RM 20 in order to get this.

Fuck off. Wait till I have a few babies ... or a driving job. So this is great for drivers.

A friend's tip : and I noted -

AFFIN IS INTERESTING : 3% on auto-billing, EWALLET TOP-UPS, and e-commerce ... capped at 500 MYR/y for monthly balances under 3000/mo, or capped at 960 MYR/y for monthly balances over 3000/mo

It turns out that Affin points are also 19% more valuable than Maybank points ... so this is particularly interesting.

Studying consumer gimmicks : TNG's AliPay Shell vouchers ... you can use RM20 max per transaction ... saving RM1. So if you VERY FUCKING RAJIN you can make 5% on your gas bill all year if you top up your gas RM20 at a time.

Here we have an excellent example of the poverty trap. If you're poor, rich people will take advantage of you to waste your time and to keep you poor.

To be fair, there's an equivalent option for Giant, and it isn't clear if you will be capped in terms of vouchers-per-transaction - you can check and let me know.

I often hear about people having difficulties in discussing sex with prospective partners. So there's this pattern where someone hasn't figured out the difference between :

A : being sexually attractive to the counterparty

B : getting sexual consent from the counterparty

... and then there's this FREQUENT problem where people spend loads of energy discussing B before establishing A. Stop it, stop it, please ... hold on ... can we talk about physics for a second ... one of these goes before the other ... B does not go first ... OMG, I thought this was obvious to people even before I ever even participated in this ritual ... can we huddle please ... maybe we can fix the incels ...

/

In terms of teaching people how to engage in romantic and/or sexual interactions with technical precision ... I mean informatically, communications is a matter of memory management ... maybe the game to teach this takes the form of an MTG-esque card game, because cards on the table are literally concepts occupying memory.

The life/damage mechanics are also applicable. But the end game should be to maximise resource points (not simply to reduce the opponent's to zero : a zero-sum game). But you can lose resources until death. So the overall strategic direction would be systematic derisking of unknowns in the counterparty's deck.

Pure glycerin as moisturiser test : I tried this before going to work today - conclusion is that it absorbs too much water for grimy days.  I'd rather just keep cleansing through the day. For home use, I don't mind the wetting effect. (2021-09-16 update : 25% is working better )

So i think if you already have good features, you can accentuate parts with tactical application of hygroscopic material.

I was thinking about this bloke who tips heavily to help out strangers. I don't have much money, but I generally have had waaay too much time time on my hands since 2005. I suppose that's why I put time into people - some of them appreciate it, others not so much. Some people are not familiar with the feeling of being attended to, and may be bowled over and feel "lovebombed", well that's just a learning process ... I hope they go out and be likewise generous with other people. On the other hand we each invest our abundances in the pursuit of greater capital, and for that I am grateful to have "friends", of the variety which I have not met, yet who think and act as I do.

/

So, someone recommended the app Feeld as an alternative to Tinder, which provides more specific preference categories. Summary of market :

Playing senior management roles is weird. You write fictional stories about people and things. Then you go around finding out who believes in them. Based on that set, you broker deals until people are more satisfied than they were before the deals, and at the end of the whole thing you present what turns up as the result of a day's work.

/

Interesting career review. Do I like working here? I don't hate it. Would I build this business with my own money? Probably not - I'd build something else. Am I happy? Well my first priority is to make myself happy on a daily basis, regardless of other people - so that part is where I spend most of my energy. The rest of my time, I'm just trying to figure out how to spend the rest of my day, and that's where business activities come in.

Why do X, except that it can be done? Quoting myself again from advice to a colleague last week, management is automation of people, programming is automation of machines, and automation is force multiplication. We don't need to have an immediate objective that deploys skill in force multiplication, in order to learn those skills. Many people are motivated to learn force multiplication, by the need to fulfill some passion. I'm more of an arms dealer - just collect all the weapons, and figure out what to do with it later. I'm just focusing on that little pattern. Maybe if I'm rich some day, I'll bother to use the capital to help a lot of people, but not yet.

Asked about whether the job makes me happy, so I referred to my speech from the orientation group's "what is your career challenge" activity - most speeches the other day were about getting rich. I said that making a positive impact on individuals (vs some abstract entity like the company), makes me happy. Help someone figure out their career, help someone save time on trivial tasks, help someone grow a diversified business - all good. I'm happy. Pretty much circles back to why I work in hospitality. Do I always work with a business motivation, or is it ever relationship based? It's probably mostly business - any caveats that need to be inserted have already been said. Whenever I work with people who are mainly motivated by relationships, I get worried that I'll offend them.

I suppose you can see that when it comes to economics, I like being a day trader with a very long-term strategy. HFT? IDK.

The Main Goal of Investment

"The main goal of investment is to not lose money."

No, no, no, wrong. This camp mistakes the means for the ends. Money is a proxy for time, and time is a factor of memory. As a conscious mind you have only the sum of your memories (sense data multiplied by time), sometimes called experience.

The main goal of investment is to protect time, and data.

Defining "Big" Data (2014-2021)

What the hell is "big" data?

Analysis while driving to the bank:

Multi-Kilobyte per second operations are good enough for sensor readings, and metadata processing, so this is probably small data.

Multi-MB/s -ops are small application data, probably also what invertebrates bench (individual cells bench a lot more).

Multi-GB/s-ops are probably personal data, like photo libraries, also I guess a meat human peaks out around here.

Multi-TB/s-ops seems to start needing networked machinery, so I guess this is Big Data's historical context.

Tropical HVAC Design

Let's talk about energy! Easy improvements to tropical HVAC design today :

1. ACs are often placed at room-top, this is fine; however air filters should be located at room-bottom, sending clean air upwards for cooling - otherwise dirty air travels upwards, an anti-pattern.

2. When AC is in use, a heat exchanger pattern is required to allow stale air to egress and fresh air to ingress, while minimising heat ingress to the cold room.

3. Heat exchangers can also link the walls and floor of a building to any cooler earth beneath, or around it.

4. Wherever heat exchangers are needed, a consideration may be made for copper or aluminium heat pipes of a large calibre. The careful design of such structures should ensure easy maintenance, and durability or replacement.

5. When water is in abundance, heat pipes can play a crucial role in the design of indirect evaporative cooling. Evaporator chambers may consist of  arboreta, decorative water features, or simply misted cooling towers.

6. AC condensate should always be recycled for its evaporable qualities, perhaps closer to AC condensors.

7. Heat pumps and expander-generators may be considered for the recovery of energy from AC systems.

Designing Payscales

So my first job in the corporate sector (2006) was in doing salary surveys. I just tried to sketch out a new salary model for a company that's got to deal with lockdown economics. People argue about wages all the time. But the basics are simple.

1. Inequality metrics matter : watch medians and means.

2. All the following points need to be considered within the local universe of a sector's unit economics, margins, volatility, and sales cycles. (Maybe we can unify these variables into a more complete model later.)

3. Everyone should have a really low fixed pay, that's high enough for their subsistence.

4. Everyone should have variable pay, tied to scoped periodic performance ( team / area / company / group / etc. ) , simply as a fraction of revenue or profit, paid out on a periodic basis that varies by sector. (Delay too long, and bad people hang around too long. For example F&B should just do pay-outs monthly for most staff.)

5. You can tag on long-service bonuses, but they have to be relatively linear.

Got any more ideas? Hit me up in the comments.

On incompetence and disability

TW: treats people as objective factors of production.

A balance must be struck in language used to address these - they are not the same. Where is the line drawn? The objective measure of competence across the dimension of time can be made commensurate with other dimensions through the quantifier of money. So "total output-per-cost" is the standard of productivity in general, assuming all costs such as happiness and health and civilisational welfare have been accounted for (which is the responsibility of educated bookkeepers).

Incompetence is when, given the same objective assets as their peers-deemed-competent, an agent's subjective variance detracts from their ability to hit lower (not upper) targets for production.

Disability on the other-hand SIC is when objective assets are deemed to be lacking in the agent-deemed-disabled. Thereupon, affirmative action occurs when the objective asset-base is actively equalised for the agent.

Where does this lead us? It then appears that in order to reclassify an incompetence as a disability, one merely has to reclassify a subjective issue as an objective issue. This has two consequences of note: all incompetence can be reclassified as disability, one, and two, the ultimate consequence of a program that seeks to eradicate disability through affirmative action ... must require every agent to surrender their subjective traits to an objective standard.

Well that is the ominous borg-like future I so look forward to. However, meanwhile, we can simply amuse outselves with this:

1. Only some, but not all performers are incompetent,
2. whereas everyone is disabled, in some yet to be determined way.

It's been an excellent year for me, personally, I have no complaints. This does not at all detract from the suffering of colleagues and countryfolk, as I speak only for myself in this moment. My quality of life has only increased since the first lockdowns began, and it probably has not been higher since I was in college (almost the highest paid gig ever). My understanding of the world has only increased, and now I command the respect of peers who deem it useful to include me in their societies, and for that I am eternally grateful. No experience is expected to persist, but in the frame of the game, one plans only with the next frame in mind. On we go.

Currently we're at around 10 million vaccinated, 4 million plus double-dosed, over 50% delta variant, and the death rate is still pretty conservative. Good reasons to be optimistic. Also, any recent rise in case counts appears to be purely due to increased testing (data is about a week late).

Shameless plug: I think one of the things I am happiest about in life is deciding to decategorise myself from "shame". In societies like Malaysia, where I live, people use the concept of "shame" a lot, as a tokeniser of negative social currency. It basically functions as a mechanism by which each individual system activates a brake whenever it receives a token of shame from some other individual system. Deciding not to accept these tokens is a really simply hack. It basically gives you an unlimited bank account to do things that people try to get you back for in terms of shame. LOL

So-called T-shaped career is really weird this week.

Pipe : I have a rough mandate to set up a data science team that delivers business impact within a year, on one hand.

Dash : On the other, I'm writing introductory manuals for manufacturing quality control, recruitment interview strategy, and coaching folks on how to route (n-to-n) nine people from one meeting, to six emails, across two priority levels. Nevermind the miscellaneous chaos of talent management across a multi-premise operation under lockdown duress.

Good challenge. While on one hand I've recently introduced the concept of imposter syndrome to some colleagues, I am not sure if I am supposed to be feeling it yet. I guess I'm supposed to. And when I'm supposed to do things, I'm good at doing them, so let me assume the form of imposter syndrome. Hm.

Also started meticulous logging of hours across both jobs today. Going to need to do this for sure, especially since I may have to raise weekly hours by another 50% in November. Hopefully geolocal consolidation to the flat is done by then. I may only get a loan approved in August, due to the volatile nature of my wage history, making it likely that move-in will be no sooner than October.

Malaysia data to-date :

Delta variant share of cases : 70%

Share of test which are positive : ever increasing!

Case fatality rate (7DMA): dropping since 18 June

~ 0.8% at MAY12 when MCO3 started

~1.7% peak at JUL18

~1.4% today JUL30

So, basically, this is great. It seeeems to indicate that we'll be back at 0.8% around the end of August, roughly as expected based on (previous, unrelated arm wave-y calculation).

My friend, interpreting the past from the point of view of the Constitution is not kacau talk. Kacau talk is when we start talking about what kind of future the Constitution allows.

The future I want: HRH Proclaims a new Emergency. Removes the Cabinet. Installs a bipartisan (polypartisan ... Malaysia where got bi-?) Cabinet. Fixes the COVID reponse. Prints money and drops the USDMYR to 4.5 or 5.0. Removes the Election Commission. Organises fair and free elections.

Help us, your Highness, you're our only hope.

Long week of emergency moving almost done. Still gotta squeeze in some desk work tonight, but first a nap.

Can I ask HRH the Agong for two prime ministers?

Did they make the base Yaris warty just to make the GR4 look better?

There are at least three sources of data for ops in an e-commerce company.

1. The most norm-scale variety is fraud and information security. Cat and mouse, player versus player. Yet the scale varies greatly.

2. HFT or its slower quantitative trading siblings may be found in the mundanities of pricing automation.

3. On the longest-term, there is the HCI concern from sub-second to seasonal psychology, sociology, and habit.

From an interview chat we had today.

I've been postponing the study of R since 2007. LOL.

To do : reset bed at home, now that moving is complete.

Looking forward to a massive cleaning day.

She : do you think my rabbit is happy?

Me : existentially?

She : yes.

Me : probably?

She : why?

Me : because it hasn't tried to kill itself yet?

Reviewing the set of INFP friends I have, it seems to be a common pattern that they exhibit a sort of bipolar fluctuation between happiness and unhappiness. The sad side is often a dissatisfaction with disorder, or meaninglessness. In reaction, they are driven to escape the former by any means necessary, usually until they reach the other extreme of chemical, humorous, or orderliness euphoria.

On the other hand I guess INTPs are comfortable with a perpetual monistic ambiguity about the non-duality of meaning and meaninglessness. We are going to make fun of you anyway, especially if you assert a clear duality.

Article 150.7 paraphrased. If the Proclaimation ceases to be in force (it has explicitly expired on 1 August), you wait another six months before subordinances expire.

Conclusion : the only reason to buy a home electric "dehumidifier" is, if you want to dry "clothes" at an efficient wattage.

1. Split unit 1HP air conditioner with inverter, RM 800 + labour.

2. Portable 1HP air conditioner, RM 800. (Probably noisier than 1.)

3. Portable 0.5HP dehumidifier, same parts but you are forced to recombine the hot and cold air for a net increase in temperature, RM1,200. (Also, probably noisier than 1.)

Note that 2. can overperform 3., including HEPA filtration, but without ionisation capabilities.

Back to a desk (hopefully).

Daily cost update :

- more than RM 20 each : rent & residence associated, essential food, non-essential food

- more than RM 10 each : transportation

- more than RM 1 each : toiletries

- less than RM 1 each : mobile data

The optimisation targets are clear.

- rent is supposed to move to investment

- residence associated is supposed to drop to under RM10

- essential food should move under RM 20

- non-essential food ... is a black-hole as long as things are up in the air, but hopefully this will get chopped down also

- toiletries is moving under RM 1 after the current trial period for some new SKUs

Realised that signalling while driving is easily a six sigma concern. There are a million cm in a km. If you're over the lane line without signalling, moving forward 1cm in 3.5km, then you've failed six sigma.

Things I learnt from watching 3-4 sigma signalers.

Weekend tasks : do claims, and possible write software, depending on what colleagues tell me.

/

Anyone who depends on others for their own happiness, is destined for failure. 🙂

/

Horrible start to the weekend. 1632h on a Saturday and work hasn't begun. Need to be stricter about deprioritising weak partnerships. Time to attempt lunch and drugging up with caffeine.

Related :

"My friend's definition of a pleb is someone who lives in a high-density KLGCC apartment."

"My definition of a pleb is someone who worries about money, and avoids working on weekends."

GS froshers now a $110k. Well it was $60,000 base in 2005, for kids from my school. Slight inflation. 100-hour-weeks! (For the working class, not the well-connected hires.)

When you tell a vendor that their output is inconvenient, and the vendor tries to argue that their output is convenient ... it is usually best to withdraw consent for the vendor's engagement, on account of the vendor's incompetence.

Edit : for clarity, since some messaged me, this wasn't about software, but about a friend. It's all business, k.

All I want is that this forces Malaysia to digitise voting once and for all.

If you can modify your appreciation, you will always be happy. If you can bask in the beauty of a dark room, you will sleep soundly. If you can be amused by the fury of your oppressors, ans neighbours, and peers, you will never lack for pleasant company. Such are the benefits of personal mastery which are sorely lacking in the teachings of our country.

You laugh. Tomorrow he will be PM. (Facists in PAS, causing police intimidation of critics.)

Schedule is much clearer this week. Looking forward to the final third of the work day. Wondering if I can draft an entire HR management data structure in 3 hours.

Mahiaddin's gambit :

I support the motion.

This is why I support the PM. (Dark Knight, Agent of Chaos vid.)

(Always pick the outcome which is less predictable, because the predictable outcome is less progressive.)

This isn't even "just" Robert Fucking Frost. The proposed bills are ALL likely to fail. But the gain in publicity of those issues, and establishment of precedent on those issues alone is worth the JFDI. We haven't even gotten to the explicit reasoning of the PM's speech.

The problem with 1-book-a-day people is they seem to have only just discovered reading and need to catch up. The number of words parsed in a straight line by your head is irrelevant to n-spatial models generated in your head. But I shouldn't complain without context, having had the privilege of being in speed reading competitions when I was seven- or eight-years-old. Technically I might have cheated - I didn't read every word, and I'm not sure if I lied on the book summaries.  (I lost to the first-place winner, but they decided to award two prizes, I got $15, and bought a skateboard - totally on-brand.)

Awake. Showered. Dressed. Put socks on. Took socks off. Got some yoghurt and instant coffee. Caught up on messages. Time to model some data.

/

A great mistake I just learnt to avoid - proper relational database normalisation means that column headers should NEVER contain a semantic distinction between singular and plural. At the STORAGE layer, each cell should contain only singular entities, and at the NAMING layer (columns and tables) you should either use ALL SINGULAR or ALL PLURAL tenses within a single database, for parsimony. Of course, singular terms are usually shorter, so I recommend those.

My stupid face : can you name an instance when this is not the intention?

Advanced a week of work in sector1. Need to move to sector2 to catch up on backlog.
