A large part of mental conditioning involves dealing with cognitive deficiencies. You don't know what you don't know, and subsequently you can't know that your instinct\subconscious is underperforming if ... your instinct\subconscious is weak. So you have to rely on trust mechanisms and a discipline of second-guessing yourself. This is truly hard.
For example when I am not in the mood for work, I am pretty much down to insufficient food, rest, or recreation. There is nothing else to blame. But acting accordingly, instead of getting distracted, I have not yet mastered.
