Regarding the notion that too many "data scientists" lack domain-specific knowledge.
Hey, it's OK to not have domain knowledge. But in fad-matured 2023, many junior "data scientists" don't even have scientific training in the first place. My personal bar for anyone calling themselves a scientist is that they've published in a science journal with high impact metric scores. Otherwise, it is more accurate to call one an analyst.
Not everyone who works in engineering is an engineer. Not everyone who works in (huge and fluffy) data science is a scientist. The credentials for a scientist are not "took a two week course in science" - the credentials are a doctoral degree from a good institution, peer review, and admission to the community of peers ( journal publication ).
