I often write about the pleb consumers that fear death, disease, dissociety, and discomfort. But there is one more fear which is important to many people ... disidentity, or perhaps in other words ... personality disphoria.
People cling to who they believe they are. This stifles innovation, of course, but we all understand the tough decisions made by governments to keep things in check. So public education encourages a fear of changes in identity.
The meme of RPG character alignment comes to mind - the truly neutral person of theravedic ideology is rare in society - perhaps they are mostly living on their own, neither law-abiding nor law-averse, neither minimalist nor maximalist in aesthetic, neither blown by winds, nor steadfast against them.
