There's a nice list of common kuffar varieties on Wikipedia. The main controversy about the term, comes from arguments between Muslims about the modal conditions for judging a Muslim (since in some circles, judgment results in social castigation, or even punishment by death). It is much less controversial for naive kuffar, or intentional non-apostate non-Muslims.

The Legal Risks of Kafirdom in Malaysia
I identify as a kafir in Malaysia, and that gives me a legal risks to manage. The term refers to a rejector of Islam, but also in Malaysia it is legally contentious to encourage the rejection of Islam. So in stating my own identity, there is a limit to the public celebration which is allowed. This is part of what life is like, and it continues to be an integral part of life as a citizen : I don't think it has been too much different, throughout my life.
