Economics of Social Life this Week
Resourcing this week has been interesting. Many meetings were executed, so I have a lot of data to work with.
1. Today, it was also revealed to me by a counterparty that they attended introductory meetings with others simply to assess the nature of new parties as a threat. I discouraged this prejudice, as it undermines the goodwill put forward by others who have sincere interest in developing new relationships - and it wastes everyone else's time, because only one party knows that there is definite zero outcome from the meeting. Ordinary business - but worth elucidating for everyone, every now and then.
2. Very few universities have a formal view on, "how does all knowledge in each department fit into a single architecture across the university". Architecture exists at the admin and business level : shit we package and sell; it is not at the actual hegemonic worldview of knowledge level. And this is of course marketed as a feature not a bug in most cases 🤪.
I approach the sum of human knowledge as a single issue. Most people think that approach is
A. Foolish, or
B. Impractical, or
C. Undesirable
So it is not often discussed. To me it is none of the above 😂. I think most people / commerciable people are idiots. I just do the minimum to coexist.
3. I spend most of my time in various relationships, listening. Someone else then asked me why I spend so much time on these gambles. I reiterated that it comes from having too much time on Earth, and choosing this as the way to kill it. This POV is not easily brained by most people I talk to. Most people can't imagine being this bored and also not killing themselves. For me the most fascinating thing is now having been in this mode for over 20 years. When you start, it's a curiousity of sorts so there is an element of adventure. After knowing how it feels to do it, it is less of a curiosity and more simply a matter of religion. Making fun of people is the best part of being a troll. The troll doesn't think they are better than others. They just think everyone else is an amusement park.
I discussed the nation of relationships in general, with a friend : "people gamble time, upon each other". For myself, every communication with any other person is such a gamble ... and since it is a gamble, calling it a charity only reflects half the story, though generally it is most polite to speak only of the good we wish upon others, and to not discuss the costs. Social engagement is therefore equal parts charity, and opportunity.
4. I have a small database of each person's perspectives whom I deal with. Most of it is also distilled into an abstract strategy about how I deal with each one. Policies are short and decisive. Easier to manage. The reasons for policies to exist are a matter of historical curiosity
With some parties I have much experience, or at least enough to know that engaging with them tends to be fairly time-consuming. With these I advise the counterparty to come and go as they please, with the expectation that I will not be significantly troubled regardless of their decision. ( Whether they believe me or not is another story. ) I also advise them to brief me on when they would like to come, or go, and I advise them to redact their lengthy reasons for those decisions. Basically, once I get repetitive explanations for phenomena, I would prefer not to entertain further repetition. "I don't care why you feel like coming or going, just me know how to schedule it."
