what is rich?

( https://www.facebook.com/share/v/171xvrrQUP/ Johnny Harris has a great video on how centiMMaires spend vs centiMMMairs )

I love talking about this stuff because it's so completely irrelevant to ordinary people. My usual points are

1. if your kids think their goal in life is to make money, they're probable aiming too low unless they have THIS scope of the landscape

2. it's irrelevant to personal desire for material things, because at this level it is purely reasonable to diversify into owning a variety of material assets

3. all that said and done, you can still tell which of the cash rich are really just intellectual plebs based on which experiences they buy

tugas ADRM

Sebenarnya tugas Ahli Dewan Rakyat :
✅ Gubal undang
✅ Bahas undang
✅ Ubah undang
✅ Tebang undang
❌ Pergi majlis2
❌ Ketuk bandaraya
❌ Kejar penguatkuasa
❌ Jaga dana tempatan

Tapi Malaysia tak matang lagi. Jadi jentera politik satu negara kolot, kemelut, serabut.

questions on consistency of style

I had some training in writing before 2001, though I have not identified as a writer. But given that my social life for most of a quarter century centres around my public notes, I hope that curated artifact performs its function precisely, regardless of what people call it.

Sometimes I have individuals commenting on particular notes, or specific phrases used. But since I think very little of the notes as individual tools, I struggle to reply on particulars. And generally as a matter of politics, I wonder if and when it may land me in court or jail or other penalty. Those considerations are just like air, in this country I was born in, for the time being, while I have been here.

degender sports

This is only because sports are designed for men's bodies.

what has to be done is to make a single category of competition, but to have varieties of sports that would be won by different body types

Marketing in Relationships

MARKETING IN RELATIONSHIPS

On social media, I read a lot of relationship rants. It keeps me focused on how different many of us are vs each other.

Many, M, who depend on social partners ( platonic, commercial, and/or intimate ), are disappointed by partners, P, who did not provide security where M expected, but P did not promise, it. Likewise for P, the most troublesome gnats are such M.

It is a serious branding, dealmaking, and operational concern. One which I feel warrants serious, and continuous concern, given how many Ms are out there on the market. Every time I forget to pay attention to this, I run into regretful complications.

I'm notoriously lazy about emotional labour. And it is incredibly cute to read about emotional intelligence complaints in relationship content. Probably, the intelligent-lazy quadrant of General Kurt's model is most relevant here.

noosphere : syllabus architecture

Chit chat with a professor I used to be on a committee with.

"I found a useful word today - it talks about the sum of human knowledge in the context of environmental epochs.

My concern as an undergraduate was that some syllabi ( my school in particular ) didn't have an authoritative view on how a student was to traverse the sum of it. That's how I ended up on the edu committee ... as I was spending all my free time figuring that out."

Syllabus design in the age of AI

A suggestion for educators, on syllabus design, in the age of AI :

- let D, delta, be the difference in student, S', performance; before a course, vs after a course

- D should be stated precisely, in terms of memory recall methodologies, M

- for example when a course guarantees that S will be able to execute M_1, the AI assisted processing of relevant documents, it should be distinct from M_2, the unassisted processing of relevant documents

a simple concrete example would be :

  • MATHS 101 : calculus with scientific calculators
  • MATHS 101b : calculus without scientific calculators

stupid trade-offs

 stupid ( read ironically ) trade-offs :

  • - dropping the commonly accepted aversion to death, for the commonly avoided "every day is a good day to die" policy
  • - dropping the commonly accepted reliance on community recommendations, for the commonly avoided dependency on personal capacity
  • - dropping the commonly accepted monetary measure of security, for the commonly avoided "being happy, simply via summoning the neural state of happiness"

Thin slicing the Left and Right

TOTD : Lefties will signal that every human is valuable intrinsically. Righties will signal that maybe 1-in-10 humans are valuable, but we don't know which 10%, so we culture the masses to distribute risk, and process the masses through the education and corporate system in order to find out who the 10% are.

Yesterday's TOTD : the Left and Right disagree on the value, that it is OK to let smart people take resources from dumb people, and give those resources to smart people.

co-guested : capitalism and socialism

One resolution for the capitalist-socialist dilemma is a formalised caste system. Individuals or corporate entities may access different insurances and opportunities, based on formal registration by caste.

Capitalists may argue that making it opt-in is basically a free market system. But what I am proposing is essentially larger government infrastructure platform, which hosts both people who :

  • 1. want to be boring for life, with limited downside
  • 2. people who are willing to risk everything

anthropology from 2005 to 2023

I devoted ten to twenty years to studying the lives of poor, and middleclass, non-Muslim Malaysians, but I did not find them less stupid across time. I examined their loves of family, friendship, and food, and their begrudging pursuit of occupations, hobbies, holiness, sophistication, and other social contexts. And while I understood much of what I observed, I did not find them to be more interesting, over time.

There is an overarching concept, in anthropology and philanthropy, that if you spend more time to understand the culture of a stupid person, you can come to an appreciation of them which is more enriching to yourself. I am not sure that I have been successful here.

Dusk light mechanics are helping serotonin a lot, today. I reflect upon my studies.
