Supply v. Demand : STEM Academics in Malaysia

Chatting with a STEM PhD who coaches engineers in Malaysia. Points raised.

  • 1. Malaysian STEM academia is "not really" academia : it's mostly industry-oriented, and pull-based/ just-in-time ( albeit very high latency JIT ) delivery of whatever industry is yapping about
  • 2. What's push-based in Malaysian academia? Mainly identity political concerns. Malaysian studies, religious studies, historical narratives, etc.
    • 2.1. An exception being, whatever is trendy in Putrajaya is also pushed a bit harder

So this results in systematic issues. Chicken and egg. Malaysian industry is intellectually poor, so it demands intellectually junior skillsets from "academia". Academia over 50 years has capitulated, and no-longer supplies intellectually senior skillsets ( or never has ).

PyJ has not, of course, been too forward-thinking ( can't expect intellectualism from PyJ ). So it pushes whatever is buzzy, often fueled by whatever industry sales people clamour for.

Being smart is not a Malaysian value.
