Rex arrested under investigation for offenses under the Sedition Act / law

1. It's ordinary PROCESS. If someone THINKS he broke a law, they make a REPORT, the police are DUTY bound to INVESTIGATE.

2. For MOST laws, detention/ REMAND is at the pleasure of the police INVESTIGATING OFFICER/ IO, for a period, afterwhich further detention is must be APPROVED by a MAGISTRATE / court. SOME laws move this power from the COURT to the EXECUTIVE branch - this INCLUDES the Sedition Act, which allows the PUBLIC PROSECUTOR/ PP that power.

3. The IO gets to DECIDE whether the investigation can be ENDED, or if it is to be REFERRED to the PP. In the latter case, the PP then gets to DECIDE, if they want to take the ALLEGED OFFENDER to court on behalf of the EXECUTIVE branch, and CHARGE them with breaking the law.

 4. If the case goes to COURT then the PLAINTIFF and DEFENDENT / alledged offender then each argue their sides of the case, and a judge makes a RULING. As you are aware, rulings can be APPEALED, ding dong ding dong, escalating through higher and higher courts until the SUPREME COURT.

FWIW, I think Rex may be guilty of sedition based on the public facts of the case at this point. The investigation may yield new facts, so we have to keep an open mind. The bigger problem is that the Sedition Act is defined very broadly, and that's why some of us don't like it. 

It comes down to whether you want a very clear law that allows clearly defined speech freedoms, or a vague law that basically says don't be annoying. 

expat pay minimums updated in Malaysia : 20k

MYR 20,000 : the new minimum monthly wage, for top expats in Malaysia. I like this number for a weird reason.

Back in 2008, just three years after I graduated, I had a reasonable idea about Malaysian corporate pay scales. I figured that I needed to make at least MYR 15,000 in the long-term, and that would be "more than enough" to cover my own personal expenses, since my entire life is planned for survival around minimum wage. ( 50 years at 3% inflation would bring it down to 3+k in 2008 MYR ). I managed to hit this number by 2011, via software development.

This was also roughly the top-end for fresh graduate pay in KL with the MBB top tickets, so it was a good round number to work around. As a performance snob, I found the folks in jobs like this rather clownish, so I generally didn't think it made sense to bill less than that.

In 2026 I'm about 30% through a 10-year study break, and so my income has been zero. I'm supposed to start applying for work in 2032, and I always wonder what that will be like ( I don't want to have any ideas about it ). I was thinking to start shopping at that time across all jobs between MYR 35,000 and minimum wage, then shortlist the most interesting ones.

The 20k number now is nice, because now I can just bench against it. Basically anyone can talk to Malaysian employers now about whether it makes more sense for them to pay 20k, and go through the hassle of hiring an expat, or just hire a Malaysian at the same rate. So as a Malaysian job seeker, you only need to out-perform expats asking for 60,000 USD/y, which is nonsense fresh-graduate pay in the first-world ...

This is typically the sort of thing that gets you locked up for being "too communist, and not Malay enough", but it would seem to be a useful position for discussion's sake. 

What sort of end-game makes Malaysia both socially vibrant and economically dominant, on Earth?

If not this end-game, what is your preferred end-game? Leaders must be articulate, in order to move from values, to goals, to strategy, to tactics.

The shortest answer is "achieve a higher common standard of living/wealth" a.k.a. improve MY's socialist-oriented infrastructure, increasing taxes on warlords, cartels, and majority shareholders, and redistributing goods and services to the B60.

- fear of infiltration by communist militants ( obsolete )

- concerns that racial discrimination will perpetuate economic disparity between races ( the ongoing T/M/B debate about whether consitutional and subsidiary legislation has made it better or worse : short answer is probably, better, but messier )

- fear of loss of culture ( European countries have many small detailed laws about standards; we should emulate that; currently Malaysia has big vague laws that everyone fights about every two months )

- fear of loss of raja2 institutions ( this probably doesn't need to change, ever, like in the UK )
