The feeble-minded student, regards a thought in their head, or a thing someone said, a theory, a paper, or a performance ... and maps it to something that is more than itself, but less than a concrete referent.
Studying the history of ideas becomes a pagpagesque adventure through the landfills of "professional" publication, for theories that have reification pathways.
The arts in themselves rarely pretend to be symbolic, so they are rarely an issue. But the theory of art, and the literary morass of intuitions that spill from it are often an issue. The natural sciences tend not to be an issue. Maths is split between the formalists who are not an issue and the intuitionists who are. The social sciences are a mixed bag - some hew towards natural science, many aspire to it but fail miserably.
