1. I was waiting for public clouds to launch them, and was very happy when Lambda GTM-ed. I developed on it for a bit, just for fun.
2. The quickest roll-your-own seems to be : k0s + kNative + alpine, or something like that. I had a brief look at this last year, without getting very far into tests. The overhead for such a system is also non-trivial ( 1+ vCPU, 1+GB ) compared to an application-level system such as in Erlang/OTP.
3. At this point I might actually need to go lower, in order to brain the resource minimisation limit. Maybe it is a matter of building a toy with Rust + cgroups.
Sometimes I feel that life is wasted on little things. But I can't find any big things worth doing, so the little things have it.
