Bicarbonate in Atheleticism

I was reading up on the bicarbonate ion's role in athletic performance. Apparently some idiots have started making sodium bicarbonate trendy ... so the literature is cluttered with SODIUM bicarbonate studies whereas just bicarbonate studies are much harder to find.

The obvious stupidity going on is, the therapeutic dose is 0.2-0.3g NaHCO3/kg body weight. OMFG ... that's like 250% the sodium RDA for non-athletes. All the performance gains are going to be correlated with the increased sodium, and I don't see a lot of studies comparing NaHCO3 to NaCl intake directly to determine the role of bicarbonate.

Fortunately there are some.
